Piazza San Marco, or St. Mark’s
Square, is the principal piazza of Venice and not to be
missed – with the likes of St. Mark’s Basilica, St.
Mark’s Campanile, the gothic Doge’s Palace and various
museums, the piazza is known not just around Venice but all of Italy.
Historically speaking, this area has always been acknowledged as
the city’s centre, with important political and religious
offices and festivals all located here. St. Mark’s Square
also opens onto the Grand Canal, easily the most
important waterway of the city.
Many guests come to Venice looking for the perfect romantic holiday
– and the Da Bruno Hotel offers the best location for such
a vacation. Just off of St. Mark’s Square is the famous Bridge
of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri), which connects to the old
prison rooms at Doge’s Palace. The bridge is so named by Lord
Byron and is a comment on the sigh that prisoners would often make
on their last glimpse of beautiful Venice from the bridge before
imprisonment. Despite that somewhat melancholic history, the Bridge
of Sighs is today mostly known for the legend that lovers who kiss
on a gondola under the bridge are guaranteed eternal love.
Walking 5 minutes from the Hotel Da Bruno in the other direction
will also bring you to the Grand Canal, but by way of the Rialto
Bridge. The most famous and oldest bridge in all of Venice,
Rialto was originally built of wood in 1250 and then replaced with
stone in 1591 – despite the difference in material, however,
the current standing bridge bears remarkable architectural similarities
to the one that stood centuries ago.
